ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned

The Registered Nurse, ADN, works under the direction of the School Nurse, Special Education Program Supervisor, and the building Principal. S/he provides nursing care services to Special Education students as prescribed by the student’s physician and consistent with the Schools delivery of School Nursing Services Model. The Registered Nurse, ADN always retains accountability and responsibility for the quality of nursing care provided to a student(s).

• Follow the Individualized Health Care Plans developed for Special Education students by the School Nurse

Adhere to recognized standards of practice for the administration of all nursing procedures, including nursing documentation/recording

Report any significant observations/concerns regarding students to the School Nurse, or in his/her absence, to the building principal and/or the program administrator

Be familiar with and follow OSHA policy/procedures as well as the District Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control/Compliance Plan

• Provide nursing assistance anywhere in the school building to which s/he is assigned in an emergency

• Assist the School Nurse as directed with any emergency involving a student/staff member

In the absence of the School Nurse assigned to a building/program, consult with one of the other nurses regarding school nursing referrals that require immediate attention

• Regular and predictable attendance

The Registered Nurse, ADN, will have the following specific job responsibilities as assigned/supervised by the School Nurse:

• Coverage on the Medically Fragile Bus (refer to separate protocol)

• Tube feedings

• Catheterizations

• Suctioning

• Ostomy site care

• Tracheotomy care

• Emergency replacement of trach tubes/gastrostomy tubes

Medications (daily/PRN/Emergency)

• Nebulizer treatments

• Percussion and postural drainage

• Oxygen administration/monitoring

• CAPD

• Vital signs

• Heights/Weights

• Monitor students on special diets

• Monitor diabetic status of students (this may include blood glucose/urine testing, and administration of insulin)

• Apnea monitor

• Ketone testing

• Dressing changes

• Provide first aid as needed

• Provide one to one care for a ventilator dependent student

• Any other student health care procedures as prescribed/indicated for a student

• Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

• Registered Nurse licensed in the State of Michigan

• Associate’s Degree in Nursing

• Current certification in CPR

Must have vent experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Must be eligible to work in the United States

• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing

• Ability understand and carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form

Ability to work with students with learning disabilities, autism, emotional, physical, health, sensory, cognitive, and/or multiple impairments

• Ability to maintain composure under stressful conditions

Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community

Must have essential technology skills, i.e. skilled at using PC computer, laptop, assistive communication devices/technology and other educational technology and software

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be working directly with students and will frequently be required to lift, push or pull up to 50 pounds. This person will be required to remain in a standing position for long periods of time. The person in this position will be required to move about the inside of the building and may be required to accompany students from one classroom to another. The person in this position will be required to communicate with others and must be able to exchange and record accurate information in these situations.
